영어에서 이 표현이 사용된 것은 『유토피아(Utopia, 1516)』의 작가이자 영국 대법관이었던 토머스 모어(Thomas More, 1478~1535)가 1532년에 쓴 글에서 처음 발견됩니다. 내용은 조금씩 다르지만 '갈수록 태산'이라는 의미가 담긴 말의 역사는 고대 그리스로까지 거슬러 올라갑니다.
